Typography

Typography is a subtle yet powerful tool for creating a unique image. With this in mind, we have created a new typeface called Aeroportal to be the main typeface for the Norway profile.

Aeroportal

The round, easily legible forms of the typeface Aeroportal were inspired by European modernistic and British humanistic traditions, as well as contemporary Scandinavian design. Aeroportal expresses friendliness, simplicity and credibility, and evokes images of waves, motion and travel.
Aeroportal is primarily intended for headline and logo use, but its clear and no-nonsense form makes it suitable as a body text typeface as well.
The typeface is developed in regular, medium and bold.

Aeroportal Regular is the main typeface to be used for most large texts. All titles must be set in lowercase only.

Aeroportal Medium can be used when you in special cases need better visibility from distance. All titles must be set in lowercase only.

Aeroportal Bold can be used for emphasizing words or phrases. All titles must be set in lowercase only.

Character set

The character set covers most languages that uses the latin alphabet, including diacritics for eastern european. The character set is called “Latin Extended 1” which is a Unicode standard.

Use for instance Word’s “Insert Symbol”-tool to find all characters. Adobe Illustrator have got a “Glyph”-pallette which is very useful.

Upper and lowercase usage

Logo: use lowercase only
Titles/headlines: use lowercase only
Body text: use upper- and lowercase

Text size guidelines

Text documents:
Aeroportal has not been designed to be read on screen in small sizes, and therefore is not legible in sizes below 18 pt. Always use anti-aliasing.
Never use Aeroportal for html body text (see Arial below). Please note: do not use Aeroportal in documents that will be distributed electronically as the recipients may experience problems opening or printing the document.

Never use all uppercase under any circumstances!
Aeroportal is a custom made typeface with exclusive rights for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was created in 2003 and expanded with larger character set and medium/bold in 2006 by Per Olav Walmann of Apt as.
